Envirochlor

Sodium Hypochlorite-Generating System

With rising concerns about environmental protection and global sustainability, extensive controls regarding the discharge of waste-water, specifically that generated from industry, have been called for and already legislated.

The various anodes manufactured by NMT® Electrodes, very often designed and developed in conjunction with our customers, are both effective and efficient in delivering these new requirements. Their coating formulations and loadings are eminently suitable in the treatment of waste-water for any application.

The Envirochlor System generates Sodium Hypochlorite by electrolysing a brine solution onsite and on demand, at a cost which is significantly lower than purchased hypochlorite. Unlike purchased chemicals, the production on demand technique means that the hypochlorite does not degrade, subsequently there is no reduction of product strength.

The system is designed to accommodate applications ranging from potable and waste water disinfection, leisure, marine and off-shore environments. Our anodes are used in, but not necessarily restricted to, the various other applications and treatments summarised below:

Electroflocculation

Electroflocculation is the process whereby dispersed, solid particles are removed from liquid using streams of hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles generated on site with no additional impurities being introduced into the system.

This process occurs when the waste-water solution is electrolysed by our Mixed Metal Oxide and Platinised Titanium Anodes, resulting in the creation of these two gases. The on-site generation of the gas bubbles is easily controlled and removes the need to purchase, transport, handle or store these volatile gases.

Electrochemical Generation of Oxidants and Organic Destruction

In Electrolytic Organic Destruction (EOD) systems, our anodes offer a compelling alternative to conventional industrial wastewater and process water treatment methods.

EOD’s are also known to reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand, COD (a measure of the amount of organic compounds in water) and Biological Oxygen Demand, BOD (amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms in a body of water).

Other applications making use of NMT® Electrodes Mixed Metal Oxide and Platinised Titanium Anodes include the treatment of waste-water containing inorganic contaminants, such as cyanide and nitrates. Different products are harvested from this electrolysis depending on several factors, including pH.

The great advantages of this electrolytic generation of oxidants are importantly:

  1. the ease with which they are handled and
  2. the reliability of the oxidants produced.
